About Haliburton County

Haliburton County has an abundance of clean air, caring communities and a spirit of enterprise. Bordering on the south of Algonquin Park, the County offers visitors outdoor and cultural activities in every season of the year. There are hundreds of kilometres of trails in the area used for cycling, nordic skiing, dog sledding, hiking, snowmobiling, and ATVing. The richness of lakes and rivers provides opportunities for recreational activities for all ages in all seasons, including fishing and ice fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, sailing, and wakeboarding.

Haliburton County is also a centre for artistic and cultural activity. It is home to Fleming College's Haliburton School Art + Design which is one of Canada's largest art colleges offering an incredible array of full-time and part-time programs throught the year and offers over 250 week long courses for 3500 adults and children throughout the summer.

Other cultural offerings include the Highlands Summer Festival - six weeks of live theatre, Highlands Opera Studio, the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, the Rails End Gallery and Arts Centre, the Haliburton Sculpture Forest, studio tours, numerous art galleries, as well as a myraid of concerts, theatrical and literary performances and festivals. The Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve is a unique location in the County. A 24,000 hectare sustainable forest that features wilderness adventure activities including the Wolf Centre, the Walk in the Clouds forest canopy tour, groomed snowmobile trails, mountain biking, dog sledding, hiking, astronomy, wildlife observation, wilderness camping, and accommodates a diversity of educational programs and cultural events.

Local Government

Haliburton County has two levels/tiers of government services.  The County of Haliburton is the upper-tier in this two level system    The County (upper tier) exists to provide services that are more easily and effectively provided over a larger area and/or cross over many lower-tier municipalities.  It can be challenging to determine "who does what" in the mutli tier system.  If you are looking for services or have questions it is usually best to contact the lower tier municpality first.

The Haliburton Highlands are home to several elementary schools. These include:

French Immersion programs are offered at the elementary schools in Haliburton.

Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS) is the only high school within the county. Located on the shores of Head Lake in Haliburton Village, HHSS is well known for its excellent facilities and faculty.  

Haliburton Village is also home to Fleming College's renowned Haliburton School of Art + Design. The College offers 15-week intensive, in-studio art certificates as well as extensive summer programming. The dramatic architecture of wood, glass and steel lets artists create their work in an inspiring setting.
